🔷 The 11th UNESCO Global Geoparks Conference, with the participation of prominent scientific and executive figures as well as official representatives from more than 40 member countries of this global network, concluded in Chile after five days of sessions.

🔹 This biennial event was hosted this year by the Kutralkura UNESCO Global Geopark in the Patagonia region of Chile, from September 8 to 12.

🔹 Iran also participated in this conference with the presence of Qeshm Island, Aras, and Tabas UNESCO Global Geoparks. The participation of these geoparks provided a valuable opportunity to showcase the geological, cultural, and tourism potential of our country, as well as to strengthen international interactions in the field of geoparks.

🔹 This year’s conference, held under the theme “Geoparks: Earth Heritage for a Sustainable Future”, focused on the role of geoparks in sustainable development, responsible tourism management, the protection of geological heritage, and the promotion of public awareness.

🔹 On the sidelines of the conference, an international exhibition of geopark achievements and projects was held, and participants took part in workshops covering diverse topics such as conservation and research, sustainable local development, geotourism, education and outreach, tangible and intangible cultural heritage in indigenous communities, and challenges arising from climate change.

🔹 A field excursion to key geosites of the Kutralkura Geopark was also organized, allowing participants to directly experience the geological significance, biodiversity, and local culture of the region.

🔹 Registered in the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network in 2017, Kutralkura Geopark—featuring unique landscapes, valuable geological features, and a deep connection to the culture and history of indigenous communities—serves as an outstanding example of the role of geoparks in bridging science, nature, and human society.

🔸 Thus, the 11th UNESCO Global Geoparks Conference provided a significant opportunity for scientific and executive synergy among countries, playing a key role in enhancing the international standing of Iran’s geoparks and attracting global cooperation.

🔹 Furthermore, during the 11th UNESCO Global Geoparks Conference in Chile, Dr. Amri Kazemi, advisor to the Tabas UNESCO Global Geopark and President of the Iranian Global Geoparks Network, was elected by members as the first Iranian to join the Executive Board of the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network. This important achievement marks a milestone in Iran’s active presence in the international geoparks arena and paves the way for the country’s more effective participation in global decision-making and policy-making in this field.
