Geographical and Geologic Location

Erg of Parvadeh – whose name is derived from the Parvadeh village and is known as Kavir-e Parvadeh among the natives – is 23 km west of Peykuh and belongs to the Quaternary period with a maximum age of 2.5 million years. This erg, with an area of about 100 km2, is located on the southern edge of the Jomjomeh (Rooh-e-Marghoum) Playa and surrounded from the south by the low mountains of Parvadeh, with an age of approximately 200 to 215 million years. Its dunes are more than 70 meters above ground level. Various forms of dunes such as Barchan or crescent-shaped dunes, star dunes, and sand funnels are among the characteristics of this erg, visited by domestic and international tourists every year. Also, Parvadeh erg is one of the most suitable places for star observation programs in Tabas Geopark as there is no light pollution in its sky.

Description of Erg and Desert

According to existing definitions, desert refers to puffed up clay soils with very high salinity and salt content. There is little or no vegetative cover except for low-salinity deserts where salt-resistant plants such as Tamarix can grow. However, an erg is a wide, flat area of desert covered with wind-swept sand with little or no vegetation. The margin of erg is also a suitable place for Tamarix and Haloxylon plant species and is usually located between Playa and the plain.
