Tabas metal engraving is traditionally performed in two distinct styles known as “Red Engraving” (Ghalam Ghermez) and “White Engraving” (Ghalam Sefid).

In the Red Engraving style, using a special tool and hammer, some of the surface of the copper or tin is actually carved away. This removal of the top layer results in a reddish pattern, which is why this technique is also known as “carving style”. It is the older of the two styles and has a longer history.

In contrast, the White Engraving style does not involve removing any material from the surface. Instead, the engraving tool is simply hammered onto the metal, creating raised patterns that appear white due to the reflection of light on the flattened surface.

What makes Tabas engraving truly unique is its exclusive designs, tools, and techniques specific to this region. Most pieces, depending on the artisan’s experience, are extremely fine, detailed, and labor-intensive.

The history of this craft—based on interviews with master engravers and the discovery of old copper vessels in the region—dates back at least 800 years. The production of copper sheets in Tabas’ traditional smelting furnaces also supports the longstanding presence of this art in the city.

According to senior artisans, copper sheets were even shipped to other parts of Iran, such as Kashan, during the 1940s and 1950s—Kashan being another hub for copperware production.

The Tabas Engraving Workshop is located in Imam Square, in the traditional Coppersmith Bazaar of Tabas. Currently, eight artists passionate about this craft are working in the workshop. The distinctive and exclusive style of Tabas engraving has attracted significant interest from both domestic and international tourists, thanks to its precision and artistic quality.
