The cultural-historical geosite of Kalmarz Caravansaries, located 85 km from Tabas (Tabas – Yazd old road), is one of the most beautiful and significant Caravansaries of this geopark, which is of special importance in terms of spatial design, architectural style, and geographical location.
This geosite includes two old and new Kalmarz Caravansaries, built a short distance from each other and they are registered in the list of national monuments of Iran under registration numbers of 21683 and 21696, respectively. The old Kalmarz Caravansaries with an area of 855 m2 was built in 1219 AH with stone and mortar. The new Kalmarz Caravansaries with an area of 3184 m2 was built in 1311 AH with bricks and adobe, and the construction date is shown on an epigraphy on the right side of the entrance. The geosite of both old and new Kalmarz Caravansaries includes interior and exterior porches. Some features of the new Kalmarz Caravansaries include having a porch, a stable, a small porch, a vestibule, a dock, special shooting holes, rooms, stables, a platform, and the uniformity of the height around the Caravansaries building (except for the wind catcher).
The new Kalmarz Caravansaries was restored by the private sector in 2016 and is used as an ecotourism residence. Other historical monuments around this geosite include Kachalbeik Tower, Robat Khan Caravansaries, and Shotoran. Today, this caravanserai and the surrounding area are known among the natives as Kalmard. In addition to the Kalmarz Caravansaries geosite, there is a wide range of mountainous and desert landscapes, diverse geological attractions such as rock outcrops of various periods, folds, and erosive morphology and celestial formations free of light pollution, making the area suitable for various tourism activities.
