Geosite of Cruziana Fossil is located west of Tabas Geopark. This geosite is related to the trace fossil of very rare organisms called trilobites dating back 485 million years ago (Early Ordovician period). Trilobites were a group of old, simple, marine arthropods (mainly shallow marine environments) with a hard outer coating of chitin and calcium phosphate. These organisms are among the first invertebrates that play a very significant role in the paleontology and geographical interpretation of the Earth’s past due to their widespread expansion in the first geological era (Paleozoic). These creatures first appeared 540 million years ago (Cambrian period) and became extinct 250 million years ago (late Permian period) with the global and mass extinction of many other early creatures.
