Geosite of Dasht-e-Kavir Salt Polygons, with an altitude of 710 meters above sea level, is located on the southern edge of the central desert of Iran. Dasht-e-Kavir has the largest salt playa in the world with an area of 60,000 km2. This desert is limited to the central and eastern slopes of Alborz from the north, to the mountains of Ozbak-kuh, Pirhājāt, and Kalmard from the east, to the Damghan- Jandaq road and Rig-e Jenn from the west, and to the Tabas-Khur road from the south. An extensive mass of salt-clay coverings is one of the most prominent features of this vast area, which is seen in the southern margin as salt polygons across the desert. Also, in the rainy seasons, these salt areas become a very beautiful seasonal lake, which is one of the most significant attractions in the region. The large volume of different reserves of salt and potash has led to the establishment of the largest potash mine and processing plant in the Middle East in this area.
