Tabas caravanserais world registration
The world registration of 3 caravanserais of Tabas in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
According to the public relations report of Tabas UNESCO Global Geopark (UGGp), Dr. Sheibani (director of Tabas UGGp), congratulated the people of Tabas and Iran, announced the global registration of Tabas caravanserais.
Dr. Shibani congratulated all the people of Iran, especially the people of Tabas County, for this world registration and thanked all the people who worked for the world registration of caravanserais. She added: By preserving and restoring these caravanserais, we will not only save a history from oblivion, but it will provide an opportunity for the world to become more familiar with the amazing culture and history of this region, and it will be a source of pride for dear Iran.
Director of Tabas UGGp said: in the 45th meeting of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, which was held on Sunday, 17 September 2023, in Riyadh (Saudi Arabia), the case of “54 historical Iranian caravanserais” was confirmed and registered, among which 3 caravanserais of Khan, Deh Mohammad and Chehel Payeh in the Tabas County and Tabas UGGp is located.
In the description of the features of these caravanserais in its file, it is stated as follows: “Caravanses are one of the most important forms of Iranian architecture, which has caused the development of routes and needs related to the demands and requirements of travel. These caravanserais have been selected by comparing the map of 200 caravanserais and none of them have a duplicate map. Therefore, it is evident that caravanserais are the result and product of the creativity and genius of Iranian architects throughout history.”
Director of Tabas UGGp, pointing out that Khan Caravanserai and Deh Mohammad are located within Tabas UGGp area. Also, she said; Khan caravanserai is located 112 km west of Tabas (Tabas-Yazd old road), Deh Mohammad caravanserai is located 65 km north of Tabas (Tabas-Boshruyeh road) and Chehel Payeh caravanserai is located 310 km south of Tabas (Tabas-Kerman road).
Tabas County has nearly 20 caravanserais. These caravanserais are considered to be one of the most prominent cultural identities of this region, which have displayed the history of the journey and life of the past people of this territory in different parts of it. The unique texture and architecture of each of these caravanserais, along with other geological and natural attractions around them, multiply its conservation and tourism value.
Dr. Shibani added: In order to better conservation and preserve the valuable attractions of Tabas County, Tabas UGGp has been registered since 2015 by registering natural, geological and historical attractions in the list of national monuments and world heritage, with the support of the General Department of Cultural Heritage, Tourism, and Handicrafts of South Khorasan province has done. We hope that in the near future, with the efforts and follow-up of this UGGp, the geosite of the ancient Korit Dam will be registered in the UNESCO World Heritage List as one of the most important and unique engineering structures in the world.
